My tussle with fate started back home in Atlanta, a city not shy about throwing a 7-year-old the first punch. I got my very first piece of mail- not a birthday card- but a note from Dad. In the most beautiful handwriting, he broke the news that he'd be calling prison home for the next five years. Time sped on, and there I was, in high school staring at two pink lines on a pregnancy test. A counselor glanced at my swelling belly and hit me with a gut punch: "Your life will never amount to anything." (Pow! Wham! ) Right hook. Yeah, that hurt.
But let's not sugarcoat this- fate didn’t ease up one bit: Grandma and I became experts at timing stealth runs to “borrow” water from the neighbor’s hose just so we could bathe and cook. It felt like another jab.
I haven’t even touched on my stutter. Then I enlisted into the navy with my newborn infant on my hip hoping for a fresh start. When I gave orders my team looked confused because of my speech impediment. So I shrunk to the back of the room. I felt like I was disgracing the uniform. It was like I was finally throwing a punch back at life only to watch as my fist missed its mark and faded in the air.
And oh, the heartbreak of losing twins before I even had the chance to hold them- a devastating uppercut that knocked the wind out of me. Time raced on and then came the betrayal—an assault in what should have been the safety of my own barracks room. That hit landed, leaving scars not just on my body, but deep in my soul. The emptiness after the divorce. The sting of watching dreams crumble as businesses failed and waking up to an empty driveway because my car was repossessed in the night-felt like blows raining down without mercy. And then COVID! When it robbed me of my best friend, Artez-that felt like a final knock out. T-K-O!
You might think I found refuge in Romans 8:28, believing "... all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." But no, that wasn't me.
I was too busy throwing punches back at God. I challenged Him. I denied Him.
My trials turned me into a skeptic, questioning God, doubting every scripture thrown my way. I was the one sitting in the back of the church, arms folded, eyes rolling, hunting for any reason to call foul on faith.
But here's where the twist comes in. Despite my resistance, despite my doubts, something shifted. In seeking to debunk God, I found Him. In the midst of my rebellion, I discovered a truth that was harder to ignore than to accept—that maybe, just maybe, there was a purpose to my pain. That every tear I shed was watering the soil of my future, nurturing a strength I didn’t know I had.
He was always there. Developing me. (Thank you Grandparents for covering me in prayer until I came to my senses.)
Fast forward again, and I'm breaking new ground as the first African American female in the U.S. Army field artillery history to snag the rank of First Sergeant and one of the first females to serve on the naval ship USS Wasp. I didn't stop there. I brought a slice of health to El Paso, Texas, with the first full-service vegan restaurant. I fire-hosed energy into advocacy, becoming one of the inaugural Sexual Assault Response Coordinators (SARC) for the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy-reforming policies aimed at healing and justice.
And now, I'm on a mission coaching women who are rooted in faith to seize the mic they've been hesitant to grab through my Proverbs 31 Powerhouse initiative. It's a sanctuary where faith- driven female founders face down their fears and unlock the potential they've been sitting on, maybe without even knowing it. Our rallying cry? "Never Pass Up The Opportunity To Take The Mic." This mantra is our battle roar, a declaration to speak our truth and shift our future.
But behind the scenes, I'm expanding my knowledge at seminary school, aiming for a Master's Degree in Pastoral Counseling. Alongside this, I've gathered over 60 hours in Psychology, Education, and Business—quite the mix, I know. Yet, if we're still keeping things 100, it’s my passport stamped with global lessons that has taught me the most.
Traveling, speaking and soaking up cultures from around the globe has opened my eyes in ways a traditional classroom just couldn't. —From the restorative waters of the Dead Sea in Israel to swimming with sharks in Belize's coral reefs. I've taught eager minds in South Korea and stood within the haunting walls of slave castles along the coast of Ghana. I've meditated at Jacob's Well in Palestine, where Christ himself once drank, and walked the sacred grounds of Lot's Wife, contemplating the lives and stories of those in Sodom and Gomorrah.
My travels have led me to ascend the age-old steps of the Maya Ruins in Central America, and to pause and reflect near the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. I've traced the footsteps of Abraham on Mt Moriah, where his faith was tested to sacrifice Isaac. (And yes, amongst these experiences, I've also survived some interesting family Carnival cruises too.)
Oh, and did I mention I love boxing? It's more than a hobby; it's a metaphor for life. Each jab, each hook, is a reminder of the battles I've faced and won by the grace of God. Because God doesn't allow us to go through anything without reason. Every heartache, each setback, was shaping me, even when I couldn't see it. (Thank you, Jesus)
So, to you, navigating your storm, feeling every setback like a sucker punch, remember: it's shaping you, molding you for something grand. -And that discovery of faith? It comes in the most unexpected ways, often when we’re not even looking for it.
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." (Jeremiah 29:11).
Keep pushing, keep fighting, and above all, keep believing that your story isn't over yet.
